A Darkened Mood

This marks the start of a new set of pages that looks at the emotionally expressive side of rock, still heavy but also maintaining it's melody.  With bands such as Laguna Coil (who will be my first feature), The Gathering, the strangely named Inkubus Sukkubus, and others, I want to take some time to look at this sub-genre.  These bands have made a marked impression on me and I would like to share this with the world...

This splendid Italian band, formed in 1996, play a wonderful mix of emotive and tuneful rock with dark gothic overtones that give it character without dominating the sound into a doom laden dirge.  At the heart of their sound is the female vocals of Cristina Scabbia and male vocals of Andrea Ferro.   Andrea has a good voice that ranges in style from classic melody to modern growling and this is used perfectly to contrast with the beauty of Cristina's hauntingly gorgeous vocals (she has a voice you could fall in love with).  This is overlaid onto a heavy but highly melodic guitar creating sensual songs that have a classic feel and are loaded with style.

They are on the Century Media label, a position they found themselves in 1998 via the merits of a two track demo that originates from back in 1996.   Since then they have released a mini-album, an EP and two full length albums. They have also toured extensively in Europe supporting amongst other Moonspell, The Gathering, Skyclad, Grip INC and Lacrimosa and now find themselves at the beginning of further dates, including a gig in London on the 1st April.  That will be worth seeing and I hope at some point more UK dates will emerge.
