DEMO EP REVIEW
A Citizen Above Suspicion 1. CAIR PARAVEL
|
A Citizen Above Suspicion,
a band formed in West Sussex just a year ago, who have produced a self-recorded five track
demo to introduce their ideas to the world.
Here we find an interestingly mixed up assortment of styles in a strange, quirky almost eerie atmosphere that unravels as the underlining feel to the music. It uses rock as a basis for song structure but then twists and turns into some refreshingly different and sometime quite brave notions. They're not afraid to try things out and that is evident in the innovative style that has begun to develop. Overall, its quite dark and tormentingly downbeat aka Radiohead but at other times theres that hushed ambient spaced vibe that is reminiscent of Bowie during his progressive period. In one song theres even a dirty guitar riff that could have crawled off a Sabbath record and another has a strange feeling of New-Wave circa 78-79 with maybe hints of Talking Heads type weird stuff. It safe to say that this is very different to the majority of material currently doing the rounds, but that is a definite strength as it keeps you listening and waiting to see what happens next. Okay, at time there is a slight naivety in the song writing, but this is their first demo for Gods sake! Its doesnt really grab you on first listen either and is quite a listening challenge to fully digest, but it does grow significantly with further plays and is worth every effort. We look forward to hearing more. Rigsby (15th October, 2002) |
