Plymouth based band Brotherhood Of The Lake have been together since 2006 and sound as tight as fuck, yet astoundingly this recording is their debut - you’ll find it incredible to believe. It’s further enhanced by the trusted technical abilities of It Bites’ John Mitchell (Enter Shikari, Architects), with independent industry backing from the excellent Glasstone Records and released in a tidy gatefold sleeve.

Spiteful and venomous sounding vocals that scream like a banshee and then bellow like a demon, but can also sing nice and cleanly thank you very much. Crushing twin guitars that batter and hack at anything within reach and pulverising baselines that track the foundation rumbling rhythm of the drums, delivered with such force that they’d surely crush concrete. However it’s not all chop and slash, and although there’s no doubt they’re a brutal band the elements aren’t limited to just this. They bring a fresh feel to modern metal and while integrating some classic metalcore breakdowns, there’s an underlying quality framework of finer detail and genre deviation.

Opening with “Fifty Owls In One House” you’re instantly hit by the shear heaviness of this band, and as the song progresses there’s no doubt left in anyone’s mind that they’re here to rip you a new arsehole. But it’s also the well written and memorable riffs and structures, interlaced with catchy chugging and thundering rhythms that make the whole package work. “The Ocean” has double kick drum sections that simply devastate and then with “Hyenas” and “The Blood Of Goliath” they take them again to another level that combines with those ripping riffs and throat tearing vocals. Finishing with “This Glorious Fall”, they begin to display their versatility and show pleasant variation with the ingress of a building melody and cunning musical while still maintaining their vicious heaviness.

Brotherhood Of The Lake take twenty minutes of your life and immediately energise it before pummelling it into shapes that spell FUCKING HEAVY! If they’re this good with their first release then who knows what they will unleash on us next - on this evidence one thing is for sure; you let them into your life and they will seriously reshape it…
