EP REVIEW DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN
1. HOLLYWOOD SQUARES
|
This EP is Dillinger
Escape Plan's first release since the amazing 'Calculating
Infinity' and the first without original vocalist Dimitri Minakakis. The
anticipation for this release has been massive because it features ex-Faith No More, current Fantomas
vocalist and all round nutter, Mike Patton. Although short, the EP takes you on a rollercoaster ride of spastic time changes, electro outbursts and bigger, more epic moments. Kicking off with the awesome 'Hollywood Squares' its obvious why it has taken so long for this EP to be released. The production is massive, every listen there is something different, each track is littered with Patton's surrealist 'vocals as noises' and the musicianship is just stunning. Standout track for me though is 'When Good Dogs Do Bad Things', nothing prepares you for the mind-blowing breakdown towards the end of the track, it is just humongous, Patton's vocal cords get a workout not seen since his Faith No More days. If that wasn't enough to whet your appetite the whole thing is ended with a bizarre cover of Aphex Twin's 'Come To Daddy'. The vocal lines sound all the more menacing with Patton sneering them. All in all this is a top class release, and a cheap price too, I suggest you go buy. 9/10 - Dan Burton (27th September, 2002) All songs written and performed by The Dillinger Escape
