When Mahumodo split at the peak of their popularity, most were surprised and many were deeply upset, not least of all the core of the band - they simply weren’t ready to quit. So, it comes as no surprise that they are back - with new members taking them to six, including a new vocalist - this time with everyone involved in the song writing. And so the spirit of ‘what was’ resurfaced Lazarus-like from the dark depths and steadily emerged into a fiendish new shape of ‘what is’ - this was the day that the Devil Sold His Soul.

As you would expect (and hope), the music carries heavy ‘modo family resemblances, the sweeping hypnotic songs, epic sized chugging riffs, majestic crescendos, cascading melodies captured in mesmeric tone and punctuated by intricate moments of tinkering.  There is additional depth with the vocals of Ed Gibbs who produces great tuneful, melodic singing, but also flicks the switch to a full death metal style, albeit a dry, hoarse growl, but it does help make the intensity much more profound.

Songs like “Darkness Prevails”, “Clouds” and particularly “Like Its Your Last” create such a sumptuous thick atmosphere, an atmosphere so dense you could fall back into it, sinking deep as it absorbs your fall - it’s a blast furnace of intensity that’s tempered by the flickering of melodic flames. “liyl” has you floating on a tranquil sea of gentle guitars, in a song that provide such a wonderful emotional tirade and the lyrics to “Some Friend” have you wondering who they were talking about.

Using the trusty magical ingredients of sophisticated heaviness, face melting intensity, shaped by adroit melodic shepherding but fusing them with the new band dynamics, the results lend to a greater variety and wider scope of powerful sounds, gentle ambience and intense mood.  They have clearly taken their time to produce something of absolute quality and on the evidence of this debut, this band is already quite special.
