Funeral For A Friend - Between Order And Model EP

[ BACK ]   [ MAIN ]

Funeral For A Friend have shot from nowhere and expertly combined a diverse mix of attitudes on this their debut EP. As well as sharing a lot of common ground with bands such as Boy Sets Fire, Hundred Reasons, Poison The Well and Haste, incredibly this band was only formed at the beginning of 2002 and yet they already show unbelievable maturity.

Their biography talks of combining the aggression of rock, the power and intensity of hardcore and the emotional drive and melodic heart of emo – and that describes this insane hybrid quite perfectly!  While keeping a watchful eye on aggression - using it economically - the melodic and emotional expressions are firmly placed on display at the front. This skilfully creates a finely poised act of barbarism with the most expert dexterity - like producing a Van Gogh with wax crayons. They use that unrefined and crude edge to build something that is cutting and raw, that contains defiant shouts of grating spite, however the sound is also inebriated with the passion and impulse of euphony. The notable vocals of Matt Davies are capable of capturing the splendour of impassioned harmony as well as projecting the anger and thrust of a bellowing roar; there’s also knowledge of where to interchange them, with perfect timing and well-gauged measurement.

Funeral For A Friend have managed to produce an EP that is quite outstanding in it’s quality and shows them as having a certain excellence, putting them a cut-above-the-rest and marking them as a band to be watched very closely. And what's better, there promises to be plenty more from these blokes in the near future…
