EP REVIEW FALLEN TO 1. BOVINE CALM
|
Fallen
To released their debut album - The Mark -
earlier this year and Bovine Calm is the second featured
track from it. This follows up from the successful song - No Allies
- that has gained so many MTV2 and KerrangTV video showings this year. Contributing to the current enthusiasm for post-hardcore sounds, Bovine Calm has an emo-esque melodic quality about it, mixed with ample aggression in those chugging guitar choruses and is easily the strongest track. Re-alignment has a mechanical, industrial beginning to the song, and is heavier and more aggressive. It's actually a little dark but maybe also slightly corny and fatuous as well, taking the tired shouty rap route. The acoustic Broken is far more gentle, almost a narrative with nice melodies, it is very gentle and soothing but ultimately has little impact. On Broken, as can be levelled at all three tracks, the vocals don't show enough expression and movement to really make the listener 'feel' the songs. This band have great potential and this EP shows us a valiant effort where they start to create a sound of their own, albeit a little grey. There seems something missing, although their style should be filled with emotion, somehow that emotion does seem to be distinct. Maybe listening to the album would give a more balanced view, but without the benefit of that their earlier EP sounded stronger. |
