Based around the Bath/Bristol area, Jim Fear - a tight-knit three-piece metal band - recorded this demo back in July of 2001. The band is named after a Dillinger Escape Plan song, so that immediately sets the scene for what is to come. And yes, they are very much in the DEP/Botch style of chop and change, discordant, jazz oriented metal, but do their own take on this adventurous genre.

Their sound is self proclaimed as an amalgamation of DEP, Mogwai, Far and Roni Size, and these influences can definitely be heard when served up in the chaotic hardcore/metalcore/noisecore found on this demo, albeit in embryonic form. Advanced Psychology For Beginners and Flossing A Dead Horse give us smashing, crunching, chopping chord sequences and rhythms. There's screaming vocals, songs with bass and guitar rhythms made up of hastily climbing scales and then there are more laid back moments.

A Version is a mix of more ambient sounds warming into a festering fume, ending with all the elegance afforded by a set of concrete slippers. Then it's the vomiting vocals and angst-ridden aggression of Optimus Primate, clearly an emotional concoction of anger, lament and distress contained in a sick bag of expression.

Jim Fear are definitely an interesting prospect that should be able to build further on these solid foundations. They show great promise for such a young band and with some all round development (especially on the quieter vocals) combined with maturity from experience, something exciting may just happen. This EP spills over with contrite and remorseful expression that's bellowed with enthusiasm, but it also suffers with authentic demo production that is rather poor and muffled. Remember the demo is almost a year old now and with the promise of a new EP that should be available later this summer, expect to see some progress. Well worth watching out for!
