Occasionally, from large Catherine wheels, smaller sparks fly and collect to create their own entertainment, and even more occasionally the sideshow is capable of matching the main event.  This is certainly the case with The Lucky Nine, which brings together such luminaries as vocalist Colin Doran (Hundred Reasons), drummer Richie Mills (Sunna/Earthtone9) and guitarist Daniel P Carter (A), with Justin Rowe and Ben Doyle making up the five-piece.  Daniel has worked the concept for a couple of years now and here are the first results presented in a debut self-titled EP released on Mighty Atom.

This EP is positively an eclectic mix of rock styles. It’s as abrasive as wiping your arse with sandpaper, as aggressive as John Lydon at a record company board meeting, yet as smooth as a greased Darius and contains as much energy as a three year old full of Smarties.

Exploding with “Hibernate”, a cracking raucous rock song with excellent ragged vocals, it’s a tune that’s got a cool driving groove to it. “Jornada” is arguably the strongest track; it just flows beautifully with atmosphere and emotion, character and grit, with a silken chorus and is like a gentle caress with a spiked glove. “We Are Possessed” with its angular punky sound, is prickly, charged with aggression and threatens anger before breaking out into a melodic smile. “Three Killers” feels more measured in pace and is laid-back in a drunken, irritable stupor kind of way.

An ‘electric shaver’ remix of “The Programme” finishes the EP - which feels the weakest track and a definite degradation of the original - kicks in with an industrial flavour (almost Nine-Inch-Nails-like), the scratchy mechanised keyboards take up the drive for the tune and is accompanied by very intense vocals.

The Lucky Nine take you on a walk over broken glass and similar to the Beaufort or Richter scale, their anger pushes to a 12 on the Doran scale.  It’s nasty, it works and thankfully there’ll be more with an album completed and rumoured to be called 'True Crown Foundation Songs - Hymns of History and Hidden Ritual', out around the 8th September.  Watch out for it - it’s bound to smash you in the teeth.
