Vert introduce three new songs, plus a remix and three interwoven tracks of keyboards and samples on this, their third EP.  Mixing Andy Dorsett’s electronica with straight forward metal-edged rock was always going to be risky, as some will like the diversity, but most rock fans will probably not.  However, the band possibly missed out on a trick, as the electronics are pretty good and certainly have the superior production, but they stand alone, get isolated and sit awkwardly out of place. If only they had dovetailed these pieces into the songs, by making them actually sound like the beginning or end proper, maybe it would have lifted the overall result, fitted the sequences in and made their sound very unique indeed.

The real rub is the vocals - as with “EP Two” - they just hang in there and often fall out of tune and flat, but on the positive side there is an improvement over their previous release, so it does suggest that there is hope with future progress. As it is, “September” has some nice guitar hidden away in the murkiness of the production, a pleasant upbeat tempo and a Lost Prophet’s kind of bounce. Whereas “Room For One More” sounds like a heavier Terrorvision, with a certain pop cheekiness getting down with the rock chords and “Alone” takes a funkier route. The remix of “Feeling” goes all ambient and gentle in that sort of Sabbath “Planet Caravan” reverb style.

This Midlands 4-piece have shown a progression on this EP, there are some encouraging elements to be found and even some plucky experimentation.  It will certainly prove interesting to see where they take things from here and just how much more they can improve.
