Be prepared to have your conceptions of a musical style recalibrated. These guys take everything you have ever experienced and push it past the end of the scale; they bludgeon any forgone judgments into a state of incredulity and leave you twitching in abhorrent disbelief. Be warned, when you muster up enough courage to listen to this you will never be quite the same again. “Buster” is one of the heaviest albums you’re ever likely to come across. Think about the downtuned, sludge driven, rhinocerial sinew of Charger, Iron Monkey or Eyehategod and factor it by the largest number you can think of. Add to that the cold-blooded intensity of early Will Haven together with the barbed and spasmodic contours of Meshuggah’s machinations and you’ll begin to come close. This is simply a nasty aural assault of obliterating heavy noise. It’s a collection of pulverising rhythms that gracelessly modify your eardrums in much the same way that Semtex would reshape a car, riffs with all the subtlety of “Stone Cold” Steve Austin doing flower arranging and the tortured vocals of a thousand souls wrapped up in one larynx. The thudding unorthodox patterns of the drums cohort with scheming guitar and base lines, with bestial screams and sick shouts to produce a horrid rumbling of bass heavy destruction. This carnage projects utter disheartened wretchedness that is beyond belief and leaves shear trepidation at just where it might go next. Despite the recent sad death of guitarist Daniel Kraus who was an irreplaceable cog in their machinery, it has been a tough decision for California’s Admiral Angry to go ahead with the release of this album in tribute to Daniel. The loss of this young man and talented musician was desperately sad but at least there is an opportunity for a little of him to live on in an album that will leave a huge impression on many. The name of Admiral Angry will remain positively embossed in this reviewers psyche for a very long time, as will the structural damage it caused to the music room! Anyone know a good builder?
