After last years critically acclaimed debut album “Burn The Flags”, the much anticipated follow-up from the Swedes was always going to be interesting and for them somewhat of a challenge. So with the help of their favourite producer Christian Silver, have they managed to create something special or has it simply been an act of desperation? By Night create a sound of chunky chugging riffs, solid machine gun drums, tracked by rumbling bass and melded together by intense shredded vocals. A Will Haven intensity and darkened atmosphere, with Meshuggah style spiky structure, pace and bruising heaviness, but wrapped into a blistering sound which is definitely theirs. “It Starts Within” and “People Like You“ are typical of a number of the more aggressive tracks, while “Dead Eyes See No Future” briefly slows the pace and “Forsaken Love” is an excellent portrayal of the character to be found from the songs on this album. Songs punctuated with plenty of detail, cliff-face drops into pleasing breakdowns, changes of pace injected with enough blitzed double-bass kick-drums to gratify all but a fan of The Berzerker! Songs shaped from a brutal precision, a ruthless efficiency that wastes no opportunity to powder your cranium into dust, it’s technical and progressive, it’s the sound of migraine put to music. “A New Shape Of Desperation” is an awesome follow-up, worthy of much merit and showing a measured development and maturity of their own very powerful signature. This is simply a must have for fans of brutally heavy music, with the bonus of great musicianship and with an added touch of class.
