East Midlands metal merchants Defenestration return after a two year recording gap with their second album, offering up a huge slab of sludge sodden, down-tuned debauchery that’s directed by the distinctive and illusory vocals of the diminutive and very girly Gen Tasker. After their almost meteoric rise to prominence within the UK underground during 2001 and the widespread positive reactions to the debut “One Inch God” they’ve had a tough couple of years with the change of management and several drummers before reaching this period of stability.

Kicking off with a deathly bellow pulled from an unearthly source, the bruising “Blood Song” kicks and screams through the feedback, vocally the Kittie-esque guttural bawl is interspersed with an angelically harmonious yet eloquently monotone singing style. Feedback links into “Fuck Defen” which ups the pace and punches its way to the darker “Rocket Surgery” that would even get your Nan showing the devils horns . “Dust Film”, “Wooden Man” and “Break The Edge” all excellent short sharp songs (rarely making three minutes), that dispense with any formalities and concentrate on damaging your hearing and that, you quickly discover is the pattern formed across the album with the odd exception of “Drunk ‘Til Death” which is considerably more lengthy and in a very laid back stoner style.

Unfortunately the very thing that sets Defenestration apart from other bands of a similar ilk - Gen’s vocals - maybe the very thing that will limit their appeal, as it can be something of an acquired taste. The band do tend to receive a love or hate response from the UK metal fraternity and this album may do nothing to change that, however if you like your metal heavy - and it doesn’t get much heavier than this - it would be well worth checking this out, because on balance it’s a damn fine album.
