Firmly standing in the progressive rock/metal camp, this quartet from the English south coast have no qualms with performing songs of the longer persuasion and relish constructing multi-segment compositions that mix emotive atmosphere with energy charged outbursts.

Considered as their debut album and with a mammoth title to match the music contained within, the 2007 released “A Monument To The Death Of An Idea” collects epic riffs that take you on elegant journeys. With often catchy and nearly always interesting songs, they make effective use of sweet guitar solos and keyboard layers to build momentum, inject passion and add variation, and often utilising gentle passages that accentuate the heavier segments. However, the quirky vocals that initially sound like they might impress ultimately only disappoint and despite obviously trying hard become distracting - they’re not without character but are technically weak, sounding stressed and failing to consistently keep in tune - which unfortunately discolours the overall performance.

There are some outstanding moments to be found in this recording and it’s a distinguished performance worthy of note for the future. The feeling is that with a little voice coaching and some careful nurturing of their distinctive style to widen appeal, Enochian Theory could emerge as a damn good rock band.
