From the darkest depth’s of the UK underground scene, Brighton’s Johnny Truant have clawed their way up the shear rock face of advertency that faces every metal band from these shores, and with this their second album, hope to find themselves emerging into the sunshine of success and recognition. It’s been a long and hard three years since their debut, but has it been time well spent or will this album be nothing more than a horrific event in the Truant library?

When you start to take into consideration the work that has gone into this album, then the answer to the above becomes quite obvious. Releasing the CD on Darren Sadler’s Undergroove Records shows a cool loyalty and obvious satisfaction from both parties and there is also to be a 12" white/blue marbled vinyl limited edition of 500 hand numbered copies on Midmarch Records. Another nice touch has been the involvement from one of the band's icons on each album (the debut featured the artwork of Isis vocalist Aaron Turner), this time it’s equally awesome with excellent production from Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz. Conversely the artwork has been largely down to a new graphic artist company run by Paul (Jackson - Drums) and they show some great innovation, for example instead of printed lyrics the inlay features pictorial illustrations telling the story of each song.

Musically, they mix styles from traditional metal, through hardcore and thrash to deathly grinding, without actually fitting into any of those convenient media pigeonholes. Lyrically they take on some of the darkest and most unpleasant subjects from life that often remain censored from everyday conversation, let alone from poetic notation and the musical atmosphere often adopts a darkened halo to match.

With some of the most eccentric song titles this side of Frank Zappa and showing their sense of humour, “I Love You Even Though You’re A Zombie Now” kicks off in a brutal mood, powerfully tearing flesh chunks from your neck as it twists and turns in squirming rapture. “The Bloodening” is probably the most straight forward song of them

all but is hugely appealing and accessible; it’s bludgeoningly heavy with some awesome riffs and just a touch of evil. “Dirty Vampire Feeding Frenzy” is a very fractious song that develops into quite a dark atmosphere before striking out with a stake to the heart. “Vultures” comes over like Metallica doing their instrumental thing and “A Day In The Death” goes at it with colossal pace and vigour, discharging so much intense energy in epic proportions, it’s even exhausting to listen too! “Footprints In The Thunder” finishes in style with a very classy and mature sound, which fronts a progressive blitz with all the subtlety of the RAF over Dresden.

There is a surprisingly clear delivery on the vocals, which major on screaming growls but mix shouts, blunt exclamation as well as melody and a spot of singing; it’s a first class effort from the frontman. The extraordinarily intricate guitar detail fills almost every conceivably sound space that may have been left by a sweet and adventurous rhythm section and creates luxurious depth and variety across the album. You really get a feeling that the band have made every effort to drive their development to the next stage and in doing so have also pushed the musical boundaries far wider. In conclusion, this is a massive album by the Truant’s and worth every moment of the wait and should propel the band to the status they deserve.
