Mothertrucker are an unusual prospect in today’s largely homogeneous music industry, firstly they don’t sound like something that is a product of a manufacturing process and secondly, they have no vocals. And despite an off putting and slightly juvenile name, and a strange fixation with American articulated vehicles (hmmm, perhaps ‘Lorries of Steel’ doesn’t quite sound the same), this band produce some noteworthy material.

First up, they create an immensely heavy soundtrack, one that challenges very capable earth moving derivatives of their name subject.  It’s a thick, sludgy, riff leaden torrent of grinding gloom, kind of Black Sabbath giving Kyuss lessons on JCB shovel attachments (sorry, the obsession seems to be catching).  The song structures form fluid organic shapes for the large part, chugging, bumping and grinding but often change shape throughout a song.  It’s kind of a progressive sludge-metal punctuated by guitars that squiggle and writhe in the relentless groove of bass and drums.  They create captivating capsules of musical timelines to transport you away for a moment’s escape - but when you live in Birmingham, that's what you have to do!

This West Midlands band have only been together for a couple of years and recorded this debut CD at the backend of 2004, in the land of white socks and division two haircuts - Nuneaton. Fortunately, this hasn’t had any effect on their output, and they have a made a splendid first appearance - don’t worry about the lack of vocals, because they make it so that less is more.  It will be genuinely interesting to see how they develop this sound and one looks forward to hearing the next CD.
