As the first official release on Mark Daghorn’s new label - Rising Records (CD001) - “For Us It Ends When We Drown” finds the welcome return of the female-fronted, gritty Brit-metalers Defenestration, with a riff-heavy six track EP.

The release features the bands well established downtuned, bass heavy and maybe slightly lumbering sound throughout.  However there are some notable developments not least of all in the vocals of the diminutive Gen Tasker, which seem to have grown in ferocity as well as ripening in an appreciably sweeter singing style.  The groove also sounds tighter, amongst the granite grinding rhythms and thudding drum salvos.

“Moments Of Truth” opens the proceedings and is definitely one of the highlights, thundering along in tank-over-demonstrator-fashion, before switching course and sounding almost Maiden-esque with some sweet harmonized twin lead guitars. Across the EP there’s an approved swell of guitar solos, melodies and lead parts - take a listen to a track such as “Excuses And Exits” for example.

The feeling on the EP is fairly positive, BUT there is always a BUT.  And regrettably on this occasion there isn’t a great amount of variation across these six tracks, and even with repeated listens they struggle to hold onto their own individually. There are too few songs exhibiting any character or wanting to stand out or be distinctly memorable, with the result that they tend to blend in together. Nevertheless, the improvements to the vocals and a general mood of maturity does take a forward step for the band, they just need to concentrate on a creating songs with greater individualism.
