"ELECTRICITY WIPED OUT HEAVEN"
(Calculated Risk Products - RISK#4)

MINI-LP REVIEW

From the ashes of their former band Machine-Made-Man, they have taken the essence of something very promising and made it even better.  With "Electricity Wiped Out Heaven", they have delivered their promises with a sound that is very much in landscape, a sound that is rich and enveloping and that asks you plenty of questions.

"Awaken" presents a gentle opening of ambient tinkering that prepares your auditory reception like some sort of calibration process and flows into "Metropolis". Before long, an industrial beat hammers an opening through which a conduit of sounds spill, flowing with force but softly, building intensity toward a cavalcade of instrumental melody.

Starting again from rest "6922/23" takes another gentle float into the atmosphere, leaving a distinct pattern in its trail and gathering impetus, waiting for the moment. And when it arrives, the haunting melodic vocals delve deep into your emotions, flicking out barbs as they go, preventing them from being removed.  A strong rhythm takes charge and raises the mood significantly, climatically expanding a symphonic mix of drums, guitars, keyboards and vocals that blossoms elegantly before softly closing to a thoughtful conclusion.

"Ascension" takes a big classic guitar sound and punctuates it with rhythms and samples in a moody five minute roller-coaster-ride of emotional scolding. An ambient atmosphere returns for "Alaskan…" to quickly settle the nerves before "fourmovements" takes you on an eclectic journey of power and vulnerability with a rock backdrop but mixing trip-hop beats and soft persuasive vocals, which takes the aural pictures to a flickering black frame that says "THE END".

This is music that exudes the light and airy optimistic ‘dancing through the woods in dappled sunlight’ manner of a Grimm Brothers fairy tale, but also shares the darker undercurrent which warns you to beware of the shadows.  Are you up to it?  I hope so, because this is what keeps music exciting!
